Helpful packing and moving tips
- Gather packing supplies before you start. You will probably need more supplies than you think so do not under estimate the amount of boxes, packing tape, packing paper or bubble wrap. You may want to allocate some boxes just for the day of your move for any last minute things.
- Good packing means good wrapping and cushioning material. If possible try not to use newspapers which rub off on everything, instead try packing paper. You can get packing paper from your mover or unprinted newspaper from your local newspaper.
- Use a heavy marking pen for easy reading. Label items such as "good china" or "crystal" on top and mark "fragile" where necessary all over the box with an arrow that shows where the top is.
- For dishes or fragile items, a layer of crumbled paper should be used to line the bottom of your box to a depth of approximately 4 inches. Each item should be individually wrapped with the crushed paper between items as needed.
- Pack heavier items in lower layers and lighter items in the upper layers. Packed boxes should weight no more than 50 lbs. Make sure boxes can close properly and can be sealed flat.
- Keep clothing in dressers and utilize wardrobe boxes as much as you can. Some movers can drop off these boxes in advance and others will tell you how many feet of your closet equals one box.
- Make sure to number the boxes and keep a list of what is in each box. Keep the list with you so that in the event something goes missing you will be able to easily identify which box it is and what is in it. Also, keep supplies such as tools and cleaning supplies out so that you can access them when unpacking. Never pack valuables such as jewelry, furs, or important documents. These items should be taken by you personally or sent with a secure courier company.
